THE BEGINNINGS: THE INITIAL STRATEGY OF TEXT-BUILDING IN CLASSICAL MALAY AND MODERN INDONESIAN NARRATIVES.

By: AHMAD, NANGSARIContributor(s): University of MichiganMaterial type: TextTextDescription: 372 pSubject(s): Language, Linguistics | 0290Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan, 1983. Summary: This study explores the beginnings of narratives in Classical Malay and in modern Bahasa Indonesia. It aims at describing differences and similarities in the modes of text-building between the two related literacy traditions and considers that the initial sentences provide the best starting place in such an endeavor. It views each of the initial sentences as an integrated part of each of the individual narratives in which it belongs, which is only isolatable within the realm of unity of each of the narratives. The unity of a narrative lies on the intra-textual relations between the narrative units to each other within its structural hierarchy and the coherence of those units in regard to the prior-texts, intentionality, and medium--extra-textural relations.Summary: Chapter I is a theoretical orientation touching upon the state of the art in linguistic investigations, the scope of linguistic investigations of language beyond the sentence level, the scope of the present study, and the methodology. Chapter II is a sample analysis of the initial sentence of a short story entitled Pertengkaran by Wildan Yatim focusing on the intra-textual relations of the sentence. Chapter III continues dealing with the same sentence focusing on the extra-textual relations of the sentence. Chapter IV deals with the beginnings of Classical Malay narratives, and Chapter V deals with the beginnings of narratives in modern Bahasa Indonesia. Chapter VI is a summary chapter outlining the findings of the study and problems for further consideration.
